Baptism

"We believe baptism signifies entrance into the household of faith, and is a symbol of repentance and inner cleansing from sin, a representation of the new birth in Christ Jesus and a mark of Christian discipleship.  We believe children are under the atonement of Christ and as heirs of the Kingdom of God are acceptable subjects for Christian Baptism.  Children of believing parents through Baptism become the special responsibility of the Church.  They should be nurtured and led to personal acceptance of Christ, and by profession of faith confirm their Baptism.”

Baptism is the initiation rite into the Christian faith. It is a significant symbol in the life of the person, the families involved, and the entire church community.  In the United Methodist Church, the baptism of infants and small children is encouraged.  Infant baptism is a sacrament where the parents/guardians of the child make a vow before God and the congregation to nurture the child in Christ's holy church, that by their teaching and example s/he may be guided to accept God's grace for her/himself, to profess her/his faith openly, and to lead a Christian life.  The congregation also share the responsibility to nurture the child in the Christian faith and life. 

If you have a child you wish to be baptized at Brooklyn Heights, the parent(s) presenting the infant or child for baptism should be practicing members of Brooklyn Heights or be willing to actively participate in the life of the church.  In order to make arrangements for your child’s baptism, contact Pastor Lim at the church phone number or write a request to church e-mail at brooklynheightsumc@verizon.net.  It is preferred that the ceremony be a part of the congregational worship, but under extreme circumstances, special arrangements may be made.
